Report by Jennifer A. Marles – Patent Attorney for LOM
I am pleased to report that the European Patent Office has issued a communication confirming that it intends to grant a European patent for the LOM’s second generation syringe design. The grant of the European patent will provide the company with the opportunity to extend the protection of its granted patents in the European marketplace. LOM already has patent protection for its first generation syringe design in Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland/Liechtenstein, Austria, Netherlands, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Portugal and the United Kingdom, as well as in the United States. Validation of the European patent on the second generation syringe in select countries will thus further the scope of LOM’s patent protection in Europe.
This protection is in addition to the protection conferred by patents on the second generation syringe design in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan and Japan. Additional patent applications seeking protection for the second generation syringe design are pending in Brazil, India and Hong Kong, with further divisional applications pending in the United States, Europe and Hong Kong.
As well, patent applications for the PowerPAKTM modular retractable needle assembly are pending in the United States, Canada, China and Europe, and a Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent application has recently been filed on an improved gas cell design for use in pneumatically-actuated medical devices.
